Baby-Friendly Maternities: Which are IHAB certified?

Maternités Ami des Bébés : lesquelles sont labellisées IHAB ?

It was to support mothers and their children that the “baby-friendly” program was created. Find out what the Baby Friendly Hospital label and the 44 IHAB maternity units in France consist of.

Launched in 1991 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Unicef, Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative ((IHAB) offers individual support to women who have just given birth and to their babies, by placing their needs at the heart of the care system. Recommended by the French National Authority for Health (HAS), the National Health and Nutrition Program (PNNS) and perinatal networks, this approach is coordinated by the association IHAB France which helps the maternities to apply the recommendations of the WHO and which delivers the “Baby Friendly” label“The IHAB approach revolves around three main principles: respect for the individual needs of the mother and the newborn, a reassuring environment for families and a team spirit allowing quality care.

The maternities with the IHAB label offer individualized support before, during and after birth, to mothers who choose to breastfeed, as well as to those who choose the bottle. If they offer all parents and future parents full information on the benefits of breastfeeding, these establishments leave them free to make their choice.

These maternities also offer all mothers to take their baby skin-to-skin after birth for at least an hour, even in the case of a caesarean and premature birth. Recommended by the World Health Organization and the French National Authority for Health, this privileged contact allows babies to adapt more easily to their new environment. The teams of maternities with the IHAB label are trained to practice skin to skin safely

In order to avoid parents facing commercial pressures, maternities with the IHAB label also comply with the International Code for the Marketing of Substitutes breastmilk of the WHO: they ban displays with advertising connotations, do not distribute samples, do not make promotional offers and refuse gifts offered to their staff … Only information based on scientific evidence is provided to parents . In addition, to claim the IHAB label, maternity wards must be certified by the High Authority for Health and be part of a process of permanent progress. The label is awarded for a period of 4 years and an annual check is carried out by IHAB France.

In total, 44 maternity wards are labeled IHAB in France which represents approximately 9% of total French births. In December 2019, three new maternity units have been labeled IHAB: the maternity unit of the Leonardo da Vinci health center in Chambray Les Tours, the maternity unit of the Le Bois Private Hospital in Lille, and that of the Pauchet Clinic in Amiens. In addition, five maternities have renewed their labeling, at the end of a demanding process and consequently, their labeling is extended by 4 years. These are the Maternity of the Sables d’Olonne Hospital Center, the Maternity of the Chinon Hospital Center, the Maternity of the Valenciennes Hospital Center, the Maternity of the Saint-Brieuc Hospital Center and the Bluets Maternity, Pierre Rouquès Hospital in Paris.

Three years after the testimony of women denouncing the obstetric violence suffered during childbirth, the National College of French Gynecologists and Obstetricians (CNGOF) launched a label to improve the good treatment in maternity hospitals. Obtained for the moment by ten maternities, the CNGOF label certifies that the establishment meets 12 requirements concerning in particular the transparency of practices, the systematic implementation of a early prenatal interview, the report of childbirth when there was an emergency intervention, etc. Doctors working in these labeled maternities must also offer their patients to register on the Maternys site. This platform offers educational videos on pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum and measures the relevance of care as well as the listening skills of the teams thanks to a questionnaire completed by the patients.
